What are the Benefits of Pilates?

Pilates is designed to lift and open your body while strengthening it. Flexibility and strength are addressed in tandem. The intent of every exercise is to balance muscle systems and restore optimal joint stability, as well as develop control and endurance in the entire body. Every Pilates exercise addresses the precision and intent of the movement and incorporates core muscle groups to power peripheral strength and coordination. Focus on deep, natural breath facilitates the ease, flow and intent of the exercise. Together, we learn how your body works and consider new physical possibilities that may challenge beliefs about your physical limits. Whether your motivation is simply to feel less constrained and more confident in your body, be a more efficient athlete, relieve pain, explore your physical abilities, recover from injury, or have a leaner more toned body, a consistent Pilates practice is one of the most effective ways to reach your movement goals.

I first came to Lora after a severe accident that landed me in the hospital, facing a lifetime of chronic nerve pain. After a lifetime of yoga practice, running, and otherwise being active, I found myself in a body that I didn’t know how to use anymore. I have worked with Lora for the last three years because her depth of knowledge and her range of skills is unparalleled: I could trust my body with her at a time when the simplest action could result in days of pain, and I trust it with her now to a point where I am able to do more complicated strength building and other “fun” stuff. I am happy to report I am no longer in chronic pain and I am back to many of my favourite activities.
